Life in the 'Jungles' of Calais

On Sunday, myself and five others got up early, left our homes and made our way to Calais. Unlike many others making this trip from the UK, we were not on a booze cruise or European road trip. UKHIP's Calais Flotilla: Donations & Evictions

On 28th March UKHIP's flotilla of solidarity made its way to Calais in a convoy which included a van full of donations - both given and bought with the funds raised by the crowdfunding campaign.

Documenting the Ongoing Crisis in Calais

 

Recently I returned to the camps of Calais for the third time, having previously takendonations in the biting cold of January, and then again as part of UKHIP in March. This time I was to be in Calais for four days, at the start of a film project which aims to tell the stories of those who continue to arrive and exist on France's northern shores.

Ever-growing, ever-changing: Inside the Calais camp

 

You can never quite prepare for the sight of the Calais camps, in which thousands of people from all over the world live out in the wilderness in a variety of makeshift structures. This is not just due to the fact that it is so surreal and saddening to see people living in this way, especially in the heart of western Europe, but because the situation in Calais is ever-changing, rendering full preparation impossible.
